Venue

Congress venue

The “Fundação Engenheiro António de Almeida” (FEAA) was been established in 1969 as a charitable venue to educate and develop artistic and cultural activity. Many students and researchers of the northern Portuguese universities and research centres have benefitted from attending conferences, seminars and courses held there.

FEEA is well located in the centre of Porto, has significant experience in hosting national and international congresses and has appropriate facilities for a medium size international congress (e.g. 250 hundred participants with expected parallel sessions). The FEEA is well served by public transports (Bus and Metro) and could also provide a place to park about 80 cars for participants to the meeting. There are several restaurants in a short walking distance (e.g. a complete meal could cost about 10-15 €), ranging from traditional Portuguese meal to a fast-food option. Accommodation could be easily arranged by nearby hotels, ranging from to 1 to 5 stars.

FEAA have an onsite museum that holds an important and interesting collection of furniture, jewellery, textiles, porcelain, paintings, watches and coins from Greek, Roman, Byzantine, French and Portuguese periods, many of which were collected by António de Almeida himself. Besides that, they are several outside wooden gardens in FEAA.

Transport and accommodation

Porto is a northern Portuguese coastal city (the second largest), located in the south of Europe and linked to the major European cities by aircraft, train and car. There are several regular (e.g. TAP, Air France and British Airway) and low cost (e.g. Ryanair, Air Berlin and Transavia) companies operating from Sá Carneiro International Airport (for further details see Aeroportos de Portugal).

The conference venue is conveniently located to access Porto Airport. Under normal traffic conditions, the travel time to and from the airport should be about 40-60 minutes by car. However, upon arriving at the airport, the easiest way to go to the city center is by taxi or by metro. The ride by taxi is about 30 minutes and the fare should be about 25 Euros. By metro the journey is about 40 minutes long (journey from the airport to Francos or Casa Musica Stations which are the nearest to the congress venue). Detailed information can be found at Metro do Porto website.

Porto has a huge offer of accommodation, from luxurious five star hotels (e.g. Sheraton Porto, Crowne Plaza Porto and Hotel Porto Palácio), passing through conventional 3 stars hotels (Hotel Douro, HF Hotels, and Hotel Boavista) to low cost hotels (Hotel Vice-Rei, The Rex Hotel and Residencial Brasília). Some of them are at a walking distance (10 min) to the main conference venue. Participants could easily find a hotel accommodation using common search engines at competitive prices (e.g. Booking.com). If using the www.booking.com try to select in location “Casa da Música” and you will see the available hotels nearby FEAA.

Organizers are negotiating special prices in nearby hotels for the congress participants, namely with the HF Hoteís Fenix. For students, besides low cost hotels (Hotel Star Inn), there is also the Porto youth hostel Porto Youth Hostel and some cheap residences. We highly recommend Casa Diocesana do Vilar. Try to book your accommodation as soon as possible, since 24 June is the Saint João festival.
